Tanith Lee

Tanith Lee was born in 1947 in London, England. She received secondary education at Prendergast Grammar School, Catford. She only learnt to read at eight years old, then began to write at the age of nine.

After school, she worked variously as a library assistant, a shop assistant, a filing clerk and a waitress. At age 25, she spent one year at art college.

In 1970-71, three of Tanith's children's books were published. In 1975, DAW Books of the USA published Tanith's "The Birthgrave", and thereafter 26 of her books, enabling her to become a full-time writer.

To date, she has published 95 novels and short-story collections, and nearly 230 separate short stories. In the 1970s and early 1980s, four of her radio plays were broadcast by the BBC, and she wrote two episodes of the BBC TV cult series Blake's 7. Her work has been translated into over 15 languages.

Tanith has received 8 nominations for, and twice won the World Fantasy Award for short fiction, was awarded the August Derleth Award in 1980 for her "Flat Earth" novel, "Death's Master", and in 1999 was shortlisted for the Guardian Children's Book Award with her book "Law of the Wolf Tower".

Tanith Lee lives with her husband, the writer John Kaiine, in England, where they share (surrender) their home with (to) cats.
